Lavender Hidcote Hedging in a 7lt pot

Lavender Hidcote Hedging in a 7lt pot

Lavender Hidcote is one of the best and most popular cultivars of Lavender for growing in the UK. Its full Latin name is Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote' and is sometimes known as English Lavender Hidcote. It is an extremely popular variety of lavender as it is particularly well suited to the UK climate.

It is a compactly formed lavender with blue / grey foliage and violet purple flowers in mid summer. It will grow well on most light well drained soils and prefers full sunlight.

Lavender can be planted as a highly fragranced shrub in many situations or can be used to make a low hedge or border. Although it will not trim up into a boxed shape hedge, it provides a lovely low barrier hedge in any garden.

If planting to make a hedge, we recommend that these lavenders are planted at a spacing of approximately 3 plants to the metre due to their size. They will soon thicken out into a hedge. They can of course be planted in blocks to create attractive beds of lavenders and the spacing can be set as required to create dense beds of lavender.

Lavender Hidcote are best clipped once they have finished flowering and the flowers can then be collected and dried to use in the house. It is recommended that they are cut back hard to avoid the plants getting too woody and leggy. Cutting them back in the autumn will encourage thicker bushier growth in the spring to create a much nicer plant.

If you are in doubt about whether lavender will do well in your soil, we suggest using a general purpose compost to give their roots the best environment to thrive in. Generally speaking, lavender do not suit well to heavy clay soils and prefer free draining soil.
